The new Chancellor of Germany is very likely to be the leader of the Christian Democratic Union Friedrich Merz. Even during his chairmanship of the opposition, he strongly criticized Olaf Scholz for his mistakes regarding Ukraine.

At the same time, difficulties may arise in relations with Germany. It is not yet clear with whom Merz's party will form a coalition. There are two options: those who are pro-Ukrainian and vice versa. In more detail, political scientist from Germany Sergey Sumlenny told 24 Kanal.

What views does Merz adhere to

Friedrich Merz is the leader of the conservative German opposition, the Christian Democratic Union. His party has about 30% support, which is twice as much as the parties that form the government coalition – the Greens and the Social Democrats.

It is obvious that he will become the new Chancellor of Germany. His party will not form a government on its own, and the question arises: with whom will he form a coalition agreement. And here a problematic phase arises for Ukraine.

The best option in the issues of the Russian-Ukrainian war is the Green Party. They are very close in their views to Merz. However, in all other issues – domestic, economic, social and migration policies – the Social Democrats prevail.

We probably expect that the coalition will be concluded with the Social Democrats. Christian Democrats will be able to reach an agreement with them on many issues regarding domestic policy, explained Sergey Sumlenny.

At the same time, the Social Democrats are the most shameful party in terms of their views on the Russian-Ukrainian war. Therefore, they will pull the CDU towards the “Merkel” and “Scholz” policies, that is, towards reconciliation with Russia. And whether Merz can get out of this will be his biggest challenge during his term.

Should Ukraine expect Taurus missiles during Merz's term?

Recall that when Friedrich Merz held the position of opposition leader, he resolutely criticized Olaf Scholz for his mistakes towards Ukraine – insufficient arms supplies and soft statements towards dictator Vladimir Putin.

According to the German political scientist, Merz will still be more decisive than Scholz. It is quite possible that during his rule, Ukraine will receive Taurus missiles and other weapons. The only problem is the speed; they should not be expected before June – July.

By the way, Scholz’s ally Saskia Esken supports further telephone talks between Olaf Scholz and Vladimir Putin, but is against a personal meeting.
