On December 26, the Moldovan Parliament adopted the National Defense Strategy for the next 10 years (2024-2034), taking into account the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and its possible expansion.
The strategy is aimed at ensuring the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country, Radio Europa Liberă Moldova reports.
Russia is the main threat to Moldova
According to the strategy, the main risk to the security of the Republic of Moldova is the Russian Federation — due to the possible expansion of military actions to the Odessa region with the establishment of a land corridor in Transnistria.

That is, this would create the preconditions for direct aggressive actions against Moldova.
Among other threats — hybrid operations carried out by the Russian Federation through local agents, interference in elections by bribing voters, and the illegal presence of Russian troops in Transnistria.
The strategy also provides for deepening cooperation with NATO for security and stability in the region and obtaining the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union.
Romania and Ukraine are named as important partners.
To implement the objectives of the strategy, it is envisaged to gradually increase budget expenditures on defense from 0.55% to 1% of GDP by 2030.
Earlier, the Information and Security Service of Moldova stated that the Russian Federation would attract maximum resources during the parliamentary elections to be held in 2025, to gain control of the parliament in Chisinau.
