A Russian Mi-28 helicopter crashed in the Kaluga region on July 25. According to preliminary data, none of the crew survived.

One of the functions of helicopters of this type is to shoot down drones. The Russian Defense Ministry cited a malfunction as the cause of the crash, but at the time, there were reports in the region of a drone attack. Military expert, pilot instructor, retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel Roman Svitan told Channel 24 that one of the UAVs could have damaged the Mi-28 engine during the interception, which led to the crash.

The Cause of the Mi-28 Crash

Roman Svitan noted that, when damaged, a helicopter, unlike an airplane, cannot continue to stay in the air in order to make a safe landing.

Where the engine stops or some kind of control malfunction occurs, the helicopter immediately falls. The pilots have no way to leave such a machine, so it is almost impossible to stay alive, he emphasized.

A retired Ukrainian Armed Forces colonel suggested that the Mi-28 pilots were pursuing Ukrainian drones, which led first to an accident, and subsequently to a plane crash.
