Massive earthquake hits off New Zealand coast

On Saturday, March 4, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 hit the Kermadec Islands near New Zealand. Tremors were recorded at a depth of 152 km.

This was stated by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The European Mediterranean Seismological Center previously estimated the magnitude of the shocks at 6.6 points, and the depth at 183 km.

Second earthquake in a month

A tsunami warning was not issued after the earthquake.

This is the second earthquake in New Zealand in the last month. On February 15, it was reported that a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 had occurred. The tremors were felt near Wellington.

Local residents said the aftershocks were “massive and scary.”

The earthquake occurred about 50 kilometers northwest of Paraparaum at a depth of 48 kilometers. More than 60,000 people in the North and South Islands reported feeling the tremors, including in Auckland and Christchurch.

Subsequently, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred 45 kilometers southwest of Taumarunu and at a depth of 78 kilometers.

Earthquakes in Turkey
