Markarova explained why voting in the US Congress is not a betrayal for Ukraine

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova told why voting in the American Congress is not a betrayal.

She explained that the temporary budget revolution was planned and agreed upon by both parties solely with government spending at 2023 levels to avoid a government shutdown.

“Both parties understand that Ukraine needs funding for a year, and not for two or three months, in order to effectively plan its defense and not be part of the complex US budget process in the pre-election year, which will definitely be even more difficult,” Markarova noted.

According to the ambassador, the Ukraine package (both a proposal from the administration of US President Joe Biden and in the US Senate and Congress) is now being actively discussed in both chambers.

The position of Ukraine and its partners is unchanged – all assistance (security, direct budgetary, reconstruction, energy and humanitarian) is needed as soon as possible. The Ambassador noted that there is almost no discussion regarding the armed component.

However, the most heated discussions are around direct budgetary and humanitarian assistance, as well as around the issue of funds for the southern border of the United States. This issue is tied to the support package for Ukraine and Israel, as well as South Pacific aid.

Markarova noted that the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States and all delegations are actively working to convey the urgency and importance of all components of assistance. She emphasized that it is necessary to convey to senators and congressmen that Ukraine needs full support for 2024.
