In Britain, an unknown man attacked people with a knife. At least eight people were taken to hospital with injuries.

The Southport massacre is reported by British media.

What happened

At about 11:50 a.m., police were called to Hart Street. It was reported that an incident had occurred there, as a result of which several people were stabbed.

The attacker was detained and taken to the station. At least eight people were hospitalized, including children.

Police have urged members of the public to avoid the area while they deal with the incident.

A woman who lives near the hotel on Hart Street told reporters she heard sirens and a helicopter circling at around 12.20pm.

Messages then started circulating on local WhatsApp groups urging people to lock their windows and doors. “We were told the man was running around stabbing people,” a local woman said.

Merseyside Police, where Southport is located, confirmed the man's arrest and said there was no threat to the public.

The man who called the police is the owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs on Hart Street. He described the incident as something out of a horror movie. He said several young girls were injured. An eyewitness described their mothers screaming as they approached the scene.

Police have not yet confirmed the ages or identities of the victims.

Journalist Tim Johnson, who arrived at the scene about 20 minutes after police were called, said the incident took place at the Hope of Hart Kids Club.

He noted that the victims were children. He described one girl lying on a stretcher covered in blood.

Her parents were running after her. It was horrific. I've never seen anything like it… People were in tears in the streets, – the journalist shares what he saw.

The victims were reportedly taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby Hospital.

Alder Hey Hospital in particular declared a “major incident” and asked parents to take their children to the emergency department only if absolutely necessary.
