Macron travels to Berlin to talk with Scholz about the war in Ukraine

Emmanuel Macron will pay a working visit to Berlin on May 9th. This will be the President's first trip to Germany in his second term.

In Germany, the French President will meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The meeting is scheduled for 18:00 French time.

According to the DPA, Macron wants to show with this visit that he appreciates relations with Germany. Important topics of negotiations will be:

  • the war in Ukraine,
  • European sovereignty,
  • defense,
  • energy supply,
  • relations with the Baltic states,
  • European Union policy towards China .

Pay attention! On May 7, the inauguration of newly elected President Macron took place in Paris. During his speech, the politician recalled the war in Ukraine. He stressed that he would work to stop it and help defeat democracy and courage.

Macron has already talked to Putin: what is known

Prior to his re-election, Macron spoke daily on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Therefore, the policy was actively criticized, and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki even put the French president on a par with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Paul Pot. Macron himself said that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky asked him to communicate with the head of the Kremlin. In addition, the politician noted that France is not at war with Russia.

When information about the atrocities of the Russian army in Bucha appeared, the French president stopped calling his Russian colleague. In total, they did not communicate for about 2 months.

After the re-election, Macron first called Zelensky, and a few days later – Putin. Then he spoke with the aggressor for about 2 hours.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Macron not to negotiate with Russia on its terms. In addition, he advised the president to refrain from any contact with the Kremlin.
