Lukashenka has his own relationship with Xi Jinping: what does the visit of the Belarusian dictator mean for Russia

Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko plans to visit China and discuss some issues with its leader. It is unlikely that there will be talk about improving Russian-Chinese relations.

Radio Liberty correspondent in Belarus Valery Kalinouski told Channel 24 about this. According to him, the visit will not live up to expectations.

Purpose of the visit

Valery Kalinovsky said that the self-proclaimed leader of Belarus constantly emphasizes that China is his main partner.

“Lukashenko has his own relationship with Xi Jinping, China,” he explained.

In his opinion, at one time he even used China to balance his pro-Russian policy.

Here I would not exaggerate the fact that he seems to be going to fulfill Putin's whims, – the correspondent focused his attention.

According to him, of course, Lukashenka will take into account the desire of Russian President Vladimir Putin during a conversation with Xi Jinping. However, Lukashenko will thus realize his own goals.

Bypass sanctions

Valery Kalinouski said that it is unlikely that Belarus will be used to avoid sanctions.

Belarus here, in the center of Europe, is tracked much better than Russia. Moreover, Russia and China have closer relations there from a territorial point of view,” he stressed.

The correspondent noted that China can independently cooperate with Russia without involving Belarus in this story.

“I would not exaggerate the role of Lukashenka in establishing Russian-Chinese illegal ties,” he summed up.

According to him, Russia and China will deal with each other themselves.

Relations between Belarus and China: the essentials

  • Political expert Valery Klochok noted that Belarus for China is a window to Europe. It is through Minsk that China can supply goods to Europe and exert its influence.
  • At the same time, Russian opposition lawyer Mark Feygin is convinced that Lukashenka has nothing to give China, so he does not need him.
  • In turn, political scientist Andrei Vigirinsky said that Alexander Lukashenko wants to attract the country's Chinese investors as much as possible so that they have more influence on Belarus than Vladimir Putin.
