Long-range Taurus missiles for Ukraine: how the Bundestag voted

by alex

Party tensions in the German parliament prevented the decision to supply the Ukrainian army with powerful weapons.

On the evening of Wednesday, January 17, The German Bundestag rejected the proposal of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction, which called on the federal government to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

This is reported by Tagesschau.

During the roll-call vote, 178 people’s deputies voted for the bill, 485 voted against it, and three abstained. This means that the proposal received less support than the number of seats (197) held by the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.

Even representatives of the Greens and Free Democratic Party, which for a long time insisted on the supply of missiles. Politicians belonging to the parties forming the government coalition with Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats did not support the bill precisely because it was put forward by the opposition right-wing conservatives from the CDU/CSU.

At the beginning of October 2023, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) decided not to supply Ukraine with these cruise missiles for the time being. The reason for this fear is that Russian territory could also be hit, since the range of the missiles is 500 kilometers. However, there is significant resistance to the Chancellor's position among the Greens and the SDP.

Taurus is one of the Air Force's most advanced missiles and can destroy targets such as bunkers, weapons depots or supply lines, even from great altitudes and distances. Ukraine has been demanding these weapons for a long time.

Recall that recently US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held negotiations on further support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
