Lithuania warned owners of cars with Russian registration plates that they must register their vehicles before March 11 or leave the country and the European Union.

The Customs Service of the Republic of Lithuania reported that from March 11, owners of cars with Russian license plates face confiscation and a fine, according to the local Code of Administrative Offenses.

This will not apply to Russian citizens transiting to or from the Kaliningrad region on vehicles registered in the Russian Federation under a simplified travel document (STD).

However, transit through the territory of Lithuania cannot last longer than 24 hours. During transit, the vehicle must be accompanied by its owner. If the owner is not in the car, then the car will not be allowed into Lithuania.

The Lithuanian customs service explained that Vilnius is implementing European Union sanctions against Russia.

From September 12, 2023, there is a ban on the entry of cars with Russian license plates in Lithuania and Latvia. Estonia joined the restrictions one day later.
