The Cabinet of Ministers of Kuwait on the evening of December 16 officially proclaimed 83-year-old Sheikh Meshal as the country's new emir. According to the Kuwaiti Constitution, the prince takes the reins of government when it is his turn. Emir Meshal is the seventeenth ruler of Kuwait and the fifth in the history of the country to take the constitutional oath before the National Assembly, in accordance with the Constitution and the provisions of the Law of Succession.

It is known that the deceased Emir Nawaf will be buried on Sunday during a ceremony attended only by close relatives. On Monday and Tuesday, the new emir and the royal family will receive condolences at the Bayan Palace in Kuwait.

In addition, the death of Emir Nawaf in Kuwait declared 40 days of mourning, and all official departments were closed for three days.

What is known about the new emir of Kuwait

Sheikh Meshal was born in 1940 and raised in the ruling house “the seventh son of the ruler of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah and the brother of three deceased rulers.” It is known that he was educated at the first formal school in the country, and also studied at Hendon Police College in Great Britain, graduating in 1960.

After his studies, Sheikh Meshal began working in Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kuwait and held various positions. In 2004, he became deputy chief of the National Guard, and on October 8, 2020, he became crown prince and deputy emir.

As reported by local media, Sheikh Meshal constantly noted the importance of consensus between the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Assembly (Parliament) to take into account the wishes of the public after previous political crises between the two bodies.
