Kraev spoke about NATO security guarantees/Channel 24 Collage
The NATO summit will take place in Madrid on June 29 and 30. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is also to speak there. Whether Ukraine can receive security guarantees from the Alliance and when this happens, read the expert's opinion in the article.
Alexander Kraev, an expert at the Ukrainian Prism Foreign Policy Council, told Channel 24 about this. According to him, so far the assistance package that NATO is preparing to provide to Ukraine is rather modest compared to what individual countries of the Alliance are producing.
He explained that what is being decided in the format “Ramstein” and in cooperation with individual NATO members, closes many questions.
Therefore, NATO will not become a “military aid hub” but rather a “political aid hub” and a “prospect hub,” Kraev said.
New guarantees from NATO for Ukraine
According to the expert, this is, in fact, “the scenario of Finland and Sweden”, that is, Ukraine, or any country for the period of joining NATO, receives so-called transit guarantees .
They are equivalent to those provided under Article 5. The only difference is that transit guarantees are provided not by all NATO, but by individual member countries of the Alliance. he explained.
Kraev emphasized that in the case of Finland and Sweden, it was the United States and Great Britain.
“And that was enough to Russia retreated. Literally two days later, Peskov came out and said that Russia had never had any claims against the Swedes or Finns, they were free to join NATO,” he said.
The expert believes that, in fact, we are talking about an analogue of Article No. 5, but outside the NATO system.
When can we get these NATO guarantees? According to Kraev, this will happen when Ukraine finally tips the scales in its favor. “That is, when the liberation of the occupied territories of Ukraine becomes a real prospect, and not just a plan,” he added.
When asked by the moderator why then we would need NATO guarantees, the expert replied that Ukraine does not yet possess nuclear weapons that Russia has.
“All NATO countries have long understood that Russia is this is a monkey with a grenade. And the only problem is that this monkey has already taken out a check from a grenade. And the main thing – the last thing that Russia can scare Ukraine with is just a nuclear weapon “, – the expert noted.< /p>
Kraev assures us that we need this NATO guarantee as a nuclear umbrella.
Obviously, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are in many ways more combat-ready than the military of most countries of the Alliance. But the only issue that haunts us is nuclear weapons, so this is the part of the guarantee that will convince us of victory and continued security. he added.
