Ukrainian No. 1 Marta Kostyuk achieved a strong-willed victory over a tennis player from the top ten of the WTA rating and reached the quarterfinals of the singles tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Ukrainian beat Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari in two setswith a score of 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:4.

The Ukrainian started the match well, leading 3:0 with two breaks, but Sakkari managed to quickly return to the game and take four consecutive Marta serves. In the ninth game, Kostyuk made a break, but the Greek woman closed the set.
In the second set, there was an equal fight on the field: both tennis players came forward and exchanged breaks. At the end, the game was switched to a tiebreak, where the Ukrainian won.
At the beginning of the decisive game, Marta lost her serve, but immediately scored two breaks in a row. In the ninth game, the Ukrainian served for the match, but Sakkari took her serve, and in the next game the Ukrainian broke and won.
Kostyuk’s next opponent was the eighth racket of the world, Maria Sakkari, who lost only four games in her two opening matches. The tennis players have already met each other three times: only one meeting ended in victory for the Ukrainian.
Martha’s next opponent will be Croatian Donna Vekic, who sensationally beat American Coco Goff in the 1/8 finals. Let us note that Kostyuk remained the only representative of Ukraine in singles — Elina Svitolina sheathed her racket in the 1/8 finals, losing to Marquette Vondrousova.
In the preliminary round, Kostyuk defeated the host of the courts, French Clara Burel, in two sets with a score of 7:6 (7:3), 6:2. And at the start of the competition she beat New Zealander Lulu San.
