Ukraine's top tennis player Marta Kostyuk started the tennis tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris with a victory.

In two sets, the Ukrainian defeated New Zealander Lulu Sun with a score of 6:4, 6:3.

The tennis players spent 1 hour and 23 minutes on the court, during which Marta served three times, allowed 18 unforced errors and had more winners than her opponent (24:12).

In the first set, Sun took the lead with a break 3:1. But with the score 2:4, Kostyuk responded with a series of four consecutive winning games and closed the first set.

Marta started the second set much more confidently — she made two breaks and took the lead 4:0. The Australian managed to break the Ukrainian's serves twice in a row, but Kostyuk eventually finished off her opponent — She took the eighth game on Sun's serve and served for the match in the next one.

Kostyuk's opponent in the second round will be the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Clara Burel and Czech Katerina Siniakova.

Kostyuk became the second Ukrainian to overcome the barrier of the starting round at the Olympic Games. Earlier, Elina Svitolina defeated the first racket of Japan Moyuka Uchijima.
