Kondratyuk told when elections can be held in Ukraine

Holding elections in Ukraine is possible only after the end of martial law. There is no point in returning to this issue until the end of the war.

This opinion was expressed by Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Elena Kondratyuk in a commentary to Ukrinform.

She noted that even based on the results of Jean Monnet’s dialogues, it was decided that elections would only be possible after the end of martial law.

“This was supported by almost everyone – both political forces and public organizations. Secondly, we reserve the Electoral Code based on open lists, by the way, with a 40% gender quota. Thirdly, now only changes can be discussed to improve this code,” Kondratyuk said.

She clarified that the changes may concern ensuring the opportunity to be elected and vote for military personnel who defend Ukraine at the front, and for women who are now abroad.

In addition, Kondratyuk said that specification of the possibilities for conducting a perfect electoral process, as well as changes to the Law on Political Parties in Ukraine regarding the responsibility of political forces, can now be discussed.

“I think that we should not return to this issue (holding elections during the war – Ed. ), because this is a big challenge for the country,” Kondratyuk said.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that there would be no elections in Ukraine during a full-scale war. He called it absolutely irresponsible to introduce this topic into society.

According to the Constitution, the next regular parliamentary elections would be held in October 2023, and presidential elections in the spring of 2024. But martial law in the state makes it difficult to hold elections.
