In 1989, she received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Hastings College of Law in California.
In 1990, Harris was admitted to the State Bar of California.
From 1990 to 1998, Harris served as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California.

In 2003, Harris became District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco. She served in this position from 2004 to 2011.
As San Francisco's district attorney, the politician created a special hate crimes investigation team that specifically focused on hate crimes against LGBT children and teens in schools.
Harris convened a national conference to combat the “gay-trans panic”, which explains violent hate crimes. She also supported same-sex marriage in California.
In January 2019, she announced her readiness to compete for the title of the first female president of the United States.
Then the politician withdrew her candidacy from the election race and publicly supported Joe Biden, and in 2020, after winning the election, he appointed her vice president of the United States.
Kamala Harris became the first woman vice president in history.

Throughout her political career, Kamala Harris has condemned Russian aggression, starting with the occupation of Crimea.
Harris has repeatedly stated that supporting Ukraine is not charity, and the future of Ukrainians is a strategic interest of the United States.
In June 2024, Kamala Harris represented the United States at the Peace Summit in Switzerland.
She commented on Putin’s conditions for “ending the war” and stated that Russia's actions, if not punished, would “encourage other aggressors and lead to the possibility of war of conquest and chaos rather than order and stability — which threatens the whole world”.
