Joining NATO and compensation for losses: what achievements are important for Ukrainians in the war with the Russian Federation

by alex

In the war with Russia, the majority of Ukrainians consider the salvation of Ukrainian citizens and justice and punishment for all Russian war criminals as achievements.

This is evidenced by the results of a sociological study conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation. Ilka Kucheriva together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from December 8 to 15.

— If we talk about possible achievements in the war, which Ukrainians are ready to give preference to, then there is a clear connection between achievements in the war and the salvation of their own citizens, the demand for justice and punishment of Russia. Thus, among the various achievements possible as a result of the war, most Ukrainians are focused on the release of all prisoners and the return of deported Ukrainians (69%), — says the study.

The survey also showed that second place is occupied by three results that are equally important for citizens: Ukraine's entry into NATO for guaranteed protection from a new war ( 42%), punishment of all Russian war criminals (42%) and compensation for all losses caused to the economy and citizens (41.5%).

Regionally, the release of all prisoners and the return of deported citizens is the leader of public preferences in the country as a whole, but the highest request — in the South (80%).

Ukraine's accession to NATO as a guarantee of protection from a new war is approximately equally important in all macro-regions (from 39% in the West to 44% in the Center). Compensation for all losses caused to the economy and citizens was most often mentioned in the Center (46%) and the South (48%). Also in the South, the demand for punishment of all Russian war criminals is higher than in other regions (46%).

In addition, every fourth Ukrainian (26%) would consider the collapse of Russia as a state as an achievement as a result of the war. However, there are significant regional differences in the assessment of this option. Thus, in the West, the largest part of the local population would consider this an achievement (40%). In the Center and in the East — 23% and 24%, respectively, consider this a likely achievement in the war. But in the South, only 10% would give such an advantage over other possible achievements and results.
