On July 27, the Ukrainian military carried out a successful drone attack on the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region. During the strike, a supersonic Tu-22M3 bomber was hit.

In a conversation with 24 Channel military expert, pilot instructor and retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel Roman Svitan told how it was technically possible to organize this. By the way, the GUR calls the attack on the Olenya airfield an “Olympic” achievement in this war.

How the drone was guided

A distance of 1,800 kilometers is no longer a problem for Ukrainian long-range weapons. However, during the operation there could be difficulties with targeting a drone or an aircraft that was converted into a UAV and carried a fairly large number of warheads.

It is very difficult to aim at an aircraft. It’s one thing to take it to a common airfield, and another to guide the drone to the target, said Svitan.

How could the drone have been guided to the target:

  • intercepted by a group that, for example, was within the drone’s control radius;
  • with the help of the so-called machine vision system, when the silhouettes of the targets are fed into the machine’s brain;
  • perhaps they came to an agreement with Elon Musk and guided the drone via satellites.

“I’m inclined to think that the so-called machine memory. After all, most likely the Russian airfield is closed by an electronic warfare system, which cuts off any control with a satellite,” the pilot instructor added.
