It's important to focus on supporting Ukraine: Scholz on ending the war, talking to Trump and Putin

The allies are holding ongoing talks on what the path to peace and security guarantees for Ukraine might look like.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this in an interview with T-Online journalists.

Ending the war in Ukraine

As Olaf Scholz noted, a simple ceasefire is not a condition for ensuring sustainable peace. According to him, it is impossible to negotiate about Ukraine without it.

The German Chancellor said that he had already spoken twice with US President-elect Donald Trump. They both agreed that it is the US and European countries that should closely coordinate these issues.

According to Scholz, security guarantees for Ukraine will soon be discussed. Germany will also play an important role in this, the chancellor explained.

However, he did not reveal any details of the phone call with Trump. Scholz only emphasized that the Republican is seeking to end the war in Ukraine.

According to Scholz, Trump believes that this will be possible when Ukraine becomes significantly stronger militarily.

Will Germany send troops to Ukraine

Journalists asked Olaf Scholz whether Germany would agree to send its own troops to Ukraine in the event of a possible ceasefire.

The Chancellor replied that he would not send a single German soldier to this war. In his opinion, this discussion is supposedly strange, since it is now important to ensure further arms supplies to Ukraine.

— Now it is more important for everyone to understand whether they can do more to support Ukraine, — the German politician believes.

Russia's attempts to weaken NATO are a failure

According to Scholz, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin suffered a defeat in Ukraine and was unable to achieve his planned goals, and his attempts to weaken NATO ended in failure.

According to him, the head of the Kremlin wanted to seize all of Ukraine and establish a puppet regime in order to prevent further rapprochement with the European Union and weaken NATO countries.

However, things turned out completely differently than they planned in Moscow, because NATO already has two new members, in particular, Sweden and Finland, which are massively investing in their own defense capability.

At the same time, the German Chancellor claims that he is ready to hold another telephone conversation with Putin. According to Scholz, during the previous dialogue he told him that European countries will not reduce their support for Ukraine.
