Russian occupation forces captured Mariupol in May 2022, and before that, terrible fighting and shelling continued. Now Ukrainian human rights activists and law enforcement are focused on collecting detailed evidence for the Russian war crimes tribunal in Mariupol.

In August 2023, representatives of the Kharkiv Human Rights Group submitted a submission to the International Criminal Court about the genocide of people in Mariupol.

According to the head of the organization, Evgeny Zakharov, there has been no communication in Mariupol since March 2, 2022. All testimony could be collected exclusively from victims and witnesses to the events.
Now the Kharkiv Human Rights Group is focused on documenting three categories of crimes:
- killing of civilians;
- creating living conditions that are aimed at destroying Mariupol residents;
- deportation of children.
“The killings took place in a variety of ways using various weapons, ranging from small arms, including artillery fire systems, airstrikes, and missiles. That is, there were very different killings aimed specifically at representatives of the civilian population, since it was among them that the greatest victims were, it was the target in all these actions that took place in Mariupol,” said the organization’s lawyer Mikhail Romanov.
According to him, from 60 to 100 thousand residents died in Mariupol. These were killed, or died from shelling, or went missing; suicides were even recorded.
