In unrecognized Transnistria, a drone attacked a military base. Analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War explained why this attack could be beneficial to Russia.

ISW said that they consider this an attempt by Russia to destabilize the situation in Moldova. After all, recently in unrecognized Transnistria they turned to the Kremlin with a request for “protection” allegedly from Moldova.

What do ISW say about the events in Transnistria

Analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War noted that the media of unrecognized Transnistria announced a drone attack on a helicopter on the territory of an unidentified military unit. They even published a video of the attack. As for the statements, then:

  • the former head of the Supreme Council of Transnistria, Alexander Shcherba, said that the incident allegedly has “Ukrainian imprints.” He predictably named Ukraine as the “main beneficiary”;
  • Moldova's Bureau of Reintegration said the attacked helicopter had not flown for years and the strike was intended to deliberately spread fear and panic in Transnistria. That is, they are convinced that this is part of an enemy information operation that is aimed at Moldova. However, the Bureau did not directly blame either Transnistrian or pro-Russian forces for the attack.

At the time of writing this article, neither Transnistrian nor Russian authorities have accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out the strike, but may do so in the future, analysts said.

Official Chisinau said it was in contact with the government Ukraine. Ukrainian intelligence spokesman Andrei Yusov assured that the drone attack was a Russian provocation.

“ISW cannot independently verify the details of the drone strike in Transnistria or identify those responsible, but< "strong> it is unlikely that the strike was carried out by Ukrainian forces given the limited means used during the strike and the insignificant target. Ukrainian officials have also recently stated that Transnistria does not pose a military threat to Ukraine.” , the analysts explained.

At the same time, they noted that recently the so-called Transnistrian authorities asked Russia for “protection.”

Russia or Russia-linked actors are likely to benefit from this provocation to facilitate the Kremlin's ongoing efforts to establish information conditions to justify a series of Russian hybrid operations aimed at destabilizing Moldova, o which ISW had widely warned about, analysts explained.
