Israel attacked Yemen for the first time on the evening of July 20, hitting fuel depots in the port city of Hudeidah. The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the attack.

The Israeli military wrote that IDF fighters struck military targets of the Houthi terrorist regime in the area of the port of Al- Hudaydah in Yemen. They explained that this is a response to hundreds of attacks carried out against Israel in recent months, writes Channel 24.

Why the port in Yemen is important

The Times of Israel wrote that Israel attacked Yemen to prevent Iranian weapons from falling into the hands of the Houthis.

Israeli Air Force Strike at the port of Al-Hudaydah in Yemen was aimed at preventing the Houthis from importing Iranian weapons, as well as causing financial damage to the Iran-backed group, journalists noted.

Israeli military noted , that the port in the Houthi-controlled city was repeatedly used to import weapons from Iran. Therefore, Israel views it as a legitimate military target. Israel clarified that:

  • the airstrike was carried out only by Israel and was aimed at fuel depots, as well as other facilities in the port;
  • the strike was in response to more than 220 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis at Israel over the last 9 months of the war.

What the Israeli Prime Minister said

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that from the beginning war has made it clear that Israel will strike anyone “who harms us.”

This morning (July 20 – Channel 24) I convened a military-political cabinet. “I asked for support for my decision to attack Houthi targets in Yemen,” Netanyahu assured.

He explained that Israel hit targets 1,800 kilometers from the country’s borders. The prime minister added that this makes it clear to Israel's enemies that there is no place where the “long arm” of the Israeli state cannot reach.
