The Israel Defense Forces have struck a chemical weapons plant in Syria that belonged to the Bashar al-Assad regime. This was done to prevent rebels from capturing the facility and its stockpiles.

What is known about Israel's strikes on a chemical weapons plant in Syria

IDF sources responded to the publication's inquiries regarding the potential involvement of the Israel Air Force in the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons facilities.

They confirmed that the military continues to closely monitor developments that could pose a threat to Israel, and assured that appropriate measures will be taken to counter any danger detected.

Israel has long adhered to a policy of avoiding conflict with Syria, while taking measures to prevent the proliferation of modern weapons. Since the start of the Syrian civil war more than a decade ago, the Israeli military has carried out thousands of air strikes on Syrian territory, although it generally acknowledges only a limited number of these operations.

The IDF noted that it would be against Israel's interests for chemical weapons to fall into the hands of unpredictable groups in Syria, such as some jihadist rebel groups.

The IDF also confirmed the deployment of troops in the demilitarized buffer zone along the Syrian border, as well as in other strategic locations for defensive purposes.

Incidentally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, amid the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, ordered the Israeli military to take control of the buffer zone on the border with Syria. We are talking about the zone between the Golan Heights, which Israel already controls, and the rest of Syria.
