Is it possible for Ukraine to join the EU in the next 2 years: the European Council expressed its position on this matter

Ukrainian authorities declare that our state may become a member of the European Union in the next few years. The head of the European Council expressed his opinion as to whether this is possible. Prime Minister Shmygal also stressed that we are waiting for signals from partners regarding the start of negotiations on membership.

There is no doubt that when Ukraine wins, it will immediately become part of both the EU and NATO. At the same time, European Council President Charles Michel said whether this could happen in the next two years.

Ukraine is on the path of reform

According to Charles Michel, our state is now going through an important path of reforms and will definitely join the EU. Perhaps this will happen even in the next 2 years.

I'm not saying that it's unrealistic (Ukraine's accession to the EU in the next two years – Channel 24). If the political will to speed up is strong on the Ukrainian side, if there is the confidence that I feel in order to implement the necessary reforms, it is possible to speed up this,” the official stated.

In addition, he mentioned the initiative to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. As he noted, Kyiv managed to go through this procedure much faster than it usually happens. Actually, our state received the status of a candidate for EU membership, despite the statements of certain “pessimistic” officials.

The Prime Minister made a statement about membership in the next 2 years

Note that it was the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal who made a statement regarding two years of negotiations on joining the EU. He emphasized, according to European Pravda, that Ukraine does not expect automatism in the issue of accession.

When I talk about two years, it means that we will make every effort to put the EU on the table with a report that we are ready. But we are aware that after this approval, the decision will take time. But we want to complete our part of the work as quickly as possible,” he said.

In addition, the head of government stressed that Ukraine is aware that the entry of our state into the Alliance must accept the current 27 EU members. This process will be full of discussion – it will take time.

“We are waiting for a signal to start negotiations”

It is important that on February 2, a joint consultation of the Government of Ukraine and the European Commission on the issue of EU membership took place. During it, Shmyhal stressed that Kyiv expects a powerful political signal about negotiations from partners. It will be the start of the process of Ukraine's accession to the EU.

We expect this spring (2022 – Channel 24) that the European Commission will provide Ukraine with a formal assessment of Ukraine's progress in implementing the seven recommendations together with additional proposals, subject to the implementation of which the European Commission may recommend to the European Council to start negotiations with Ukraine at the end of 2023, the Prime Minister noted. that Ukraine is completing the implementation of 7 recommendations, allowing to launch the process of gaining membership by our state. Then he also noted that the amount of work that our state should do and has already done is colossal.
