She was born on April 29, 1964 in Lviv in the family of a teacher and a plumber. And already in 1987 she graduated with honors from the Faculty of Philology of the Ivan Franko Lviv State University with a degree in Ukrainian Philology.
From my student days until 1991, I worked as a laboratory assistant at the Department of General Linguistics at Lviv State University. Ivan Franko and the head of the Center for Ukrainian Studies at the Department of Folklore.
In 1990 — In 1995, she was a teacher at the Department of Languages at the Lviv State Institute of Applied Arts (now & #8212; this is the Lviv National Academy of Arts). From September 1, 1991 to November 15, 2023, Irina Farion was a teacher, associate professor, doctor of philology, professor of the Ukrainian language department of the National University of Lviv Polytechnic. But then she got into a scandal, which is why she was even fired from there.
Scandals with Irina Farion
In November 2024, the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings against Irina Farion, ordering examinations for her statements and publications.
In one of her interviews, Farion stated that she categorically does not accept Russian-speaking military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and cannot call them Ukrainians. After these words, she was criticized, and the linguist received condemnation.
At one time, Irina Farion also published a message on social networks with a screenshot of a message from a pro-Ukrainian student in temporarily occupied Crimea. The released frame contained the name, surname and other personal information of the sender.
After this, the Russian special services began to persecute the student, said Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets.
Already on November 15 it became known that Irina Farion was fired from the Lviv Polytechnic after the opening of criminal proceedings by the SBU.
However, she decided to sue, after which she was reinstated in her position, and the court ordered her to pay 124 thousand UAH for a forced break from work.
Criminal proceedings were opened against Irina Farion under four articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Among them:
- violation of equality of citizens depending on their race, nationality, regional affiliation, religious beliefs, disability and other grounds;
- insulting the honor and dignity of a serviceman, threats to a serviceman;
- violation of the confidentiality of correspondence, telephone conversations, telegraphic or other correspondence transmitted by means of communication or via a computer;
- violation of privacy.
Personal life of Irina Farion
Irina Farion was divorced. She is survived by a daughter, a grandson and a granddaughter.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky responded to the assassination attempt on Irina Farion on the evening of July 19. Then an unknown person shot her on one of the streets of Lvov.
