Ireland will push for sanctions on Russian oil/independent.ie
Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said that Ireland would insist on imposing sanctions against Russian oil and called on EU members to unite on this issue.
The corresponding statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Brussels before the meeting with his European counterparts. He noted that Ireland will require a maximalist approach to the fourth round of sanctions against the Putin regime.
According to Coveney, Ireland has long sought to take a more radical position in order to stop the continuation of the war against Ukraine. He added that this primarily concerns sanctions against Russian oil.
We know that this is very difficult for some member states, and we must maintain a unified position across the EU,” he added.
EU continues to finance the war
In his speech, Coveney noted that the European Union is spending hundreds of millions of euros on oil imports from Russia, which is a direct financing of war and brutality.
In our opinion, it is necessary to stop financing the war, even though it creates huge challenges that the EU must solve together, the minister summed up.
At the same time, he stressed that it is not yet known whether oil issues will be included in the next package of sanctions.
We heard from the president of the Commission that they are now working on so that oil will be part of the next package of sanctions, and we believe that the sooner this happens, the better,” he said in his appeal.
Deputy Liz Cheney spoke about the embargo on Russian oil imports earlier. She noted that European countries should realize that they are financing the genocide of the Ukrainian people.
