The constantly tense relations between Iran and Israel have become especially aggravated after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Ghania and Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr. Tehran has openly promised to take revenge on Tel Aviv.

The US expects Iran to attack Israel in the coming days. It could even happen this weekend. WSJ journalists write that the future attack will be much stronger and more unexpected than the April one.

Waiting for a New Spate of Aggression

The efforts of a number of diplomats from different countries who tried to convince Iran and Hezbollah to abandon revenge were in vain.

There is no point. Israel has crossed all the red lines. Our response will be swift and severe, – said the Iranian diplomat.

The publication notes that Iran has not yet decided how exactly to take revenge on Israel. It is the lack of information, the lack of understanding of what and when the response might be, that has pushed the region to one of the most dangerous moments since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.

In anticipation of the Iranian response, the United States has moved additional military assets to the Middle East. In particular, an additional squadron of fighter jets has been sent there.

It should be noted that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has announced a brutal response to the incident in Beirut when Ghania was killed. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, speaking at Shukr's funeral, said the killing had moved the conflict into another escalation phase.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the country after the killings of Ghaniya and Shukr that “difficult days lie ahead.”

Arab officials said Iran and Hezbollah believed that whatever form the response took, it would have to be stronger than the April shelling. Hezbollah has indicated that its response may not be a single attack but a series of actions.

Some are concerned that the attack could involve not only Iran and Hezbollah, but also other allied regional militias, such as Yemen's Houthis and militants in Iraq.
