Iran may supply Russia with ballistic missiles: will Ukraine be able to shoot them down?

Russia plans to buy ballistic missiles from Iran. But only two air defense systems can shoot down such weapons – the American Patriot air defense system and the Italian SAMP/T air defense system.

Military expert Pavel Narozhny told Channel 24 about this, noting that the cost of missiles for these systems is quite high. We are talking about several million dollars per shot. Let us note that the United States is convinced that short-range missiles can be transferred to the aggressor country.

“In order to shoot down one ballistic missile, we fire a missile worth 15 million dollars and more. The problem is not even about money,” Narozhny emphasized.

The problem is that the number of such missiles in warehouses is relatively small. The number of such weapons in Ukraine is a state secret. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal wrote that there are problems with the production of missiles for air defense systems.

After the massive Russian shelling of Ukraine on January 2, the UK announced that it was transferring 200 missiles to the Ukrainian state. These could probably be missiles for the Patriot system.

Japan also announced the transfer of missiles. The country stated that we are talking about missiles specifically for this American air defense system. It should be noted that Japan, in order to transfer these weapons, changed its export laws. After all, the supply of such missiles abroad was prohibited. By the way, this is one of the countries that has its own production of missiles for the Patriot air defense system, which was licensed by the United States.

There is nothing good about that Iran may supply missiles. But I am more than confident that we are ready for this and will be able to fight it off,” the military expert emphasized.

Iran has several modifications of ballistic missiles. Their range is up to 600 kilometers. This means that such weapons from the territory of Belarus, Russia or temporarily occupied Crimea can hit almost the entire territory of Ukraine.

Russia may receive ballistics from Iran

  • Journalists of The Wall Street Journal, citing officials The United States noted that the country is concerned that Russian negotiations with Iran on the acquisition of short-range ballistic missiles are actively moving forward. Potentially, Russia could be provided with weapons as early as the spring of 2024.
  • The fact that Iran may be preparing to transfer ballistics to Russia was announced in the White House back in November 2023. US concerns about the possible transfer of weapons to the Russians intensified when Iran showed the missiles to the aggressor country's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu when he visited Tehran.
  • The Institute for the Study of War reported in September that Russia and Iran may sign a new agreement on the supply of ballistic missiles and drones. Ukrainian intelligence then stated that they were taking measures to prevent the transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia from Iran.
