Invisible coffins: the number of graves of the Russian military is growing in Crimea

In the annexed Crimea, the number of graves of Russian servicemen who died in Ukraine is growing. The Crimean military losses of Russia, according to minimal estimates, are approaching three hundred people.

They are already noticeable visually – by the commemorative signs in their honor, which the Russian authorities of Crimea are installing on the Crimean streets. Realities continue to follow what is happening on the peninsula while Russia is at war with Ukraine.

It is not known for certain how many Crimeans are fighting against Ukraine in the ranks of the Russian army. In early September last year, the Russian head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, spoke of 1,200 Crimean “volunteers.”

During the mobilization, the Crimeans were subject to conscription

However, how many of them were sent during the “shared mobilization” in Russia is unknown. These data are not publicly announced by the Russian authorities. Information about losses is also unknown.

But the fact that the death of the Russian military from Crimea is massive is proved by more and more obituaries and military memorial plaques, which are becoming more and more on the Crimean peninsula.

It is difficult to track this information by the number of coffins, because most of the dead soldiers are buried quietly.

The Representation of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea made indicative calculations. As of the end of October 2022, the department recorded at least 187 burials of dead Russian soldiers in Crimea.

As of the beginning of 2023, there are already 243 graves of the Russian military in Crimea, of which 143 of the dead were probably citizens of Ukraine. For two months the number of graves of the Russian military in the Crimea has increased by fifty. And compared with the beginning of September, almost a hundred.
