< p _ngcontent-sc86="" class="news-annotation">On September 2, the Conservative Party of Great Britain completed voting for a new political force leader and prime minister. The results are due on Monday, September 5th.

After the results are announced, the Queen will formally nominate the winner. The new prime minister will then appoint ministers.

The current prime minister, Boris Johnson, is expected to deliver his farewell speech on the morning of Tuesday 6 September.

How the UK elections work

Only party members are allowed to choose a leader and by default the country's next prime minister. The ballots were sent out from 1 to 5 August.

Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Foreign Minister Lizz Truss compete for the premiership.

Media writes that Truss is the “clear favorite” and has great support among party members throughout the Kingdom. Sunak was more supported by Conservative MPs.

Before this

  • On July 7, Johnson announced that he was resigning as prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. However, he remained in office until a new leader was elected.
  • In an address to Ukrainians, politicians stressed that the UK would continue to support Ukraine under any circumstances.
