In the Czech Republic they called Orban “a Trojan horse destroying European unity”

by alex

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is a Trojan horse who is destroying European unity and protecting Russian interests.

This was stated by Czech Minister of European Affairs Martin Dvorak after Orban blocked financial aid to Ukraine during the European Council summit last week, writes Euroactiv.

— Today, Orban is the Trojan horse that is intensively and, unfortunately, increasingly effectively destroying this unity and trying to show that we should ignore Ukraine, — said Dvorak.

According to the Czech minister, Orban is blackmailing Europe and abusing the right of veto.

During the European Council meeting, Orbán left the meeting room, allowing the summit to approve the start of negotiations with Ukraine. However, he blocked debate on revising the EU's long-term budget, which included the allocation of about 50 billion euros to support Ukraine.

Orban has been criticized for using the Ukrainian issue as leverage in an attempt to unblock access to EU funds that have been frozen due to the threat to the rule of law in the country by the current Hungarian government. Last week the European Commission decided to release 10 billion euros after Hungary published a report on judicial reform. However, about 21 billion euros remain frozen.

— I think the real name (of Hungary's approach) — blackmail. I think the real name — abuse of the veto power not to protect the national interests of Hungary, but to protect the interests of Russia, — Dvorak added.

At the same time, Dvořák's debate partner, Alena Schillerová of the opposition party ANO, refrained from commenting on Orbán's criticism and questioned the wisdom of including the topic of Ukraine's EU accession negotiations on the summit agenda at this time. She noted that Ukraine needs to take a number of reform steps.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban could be persuaded to provide Ukraine with €50 billion in macro-financial assistance in 2024, since funds for his country depend on it.
