In the capital of Iceland, the square near the Russian embassy was named after Kyiv/Ukraine Street

In Reykjavik, on April 27, 2022, they unanimously decided to rename one of the squares in honor of the Ukrainian capital – Kyiv.

It is known that officially the square will have a double name for Old Norse and Icelandic “Kænugarður/Kýiv-torg”, respectively.

By naming the square in Old Norse, the authors emphasized the thousand-year history of Kyiv. However, there will also be an English transliteration – Kyiv Square.

Kyivska Square will be located at the intersection of streets where foreign embassies, including Russian ones, are located.

“Thus, Reykjavik sends a clear signal of support to the Ukrainian people and at the same time reminiscent of the long-standing relationship between Iceland and Kyiv,” explained city councilor Ejor Arnalds.

Examples of street name changes in other countries

  • The mayor of Prague supported the initiative to rename part of the street, to which houses the Russian embassy in the Czech Republic. It will be called Ukrajinských hrdinov (Ukrainian Heroes).
  • The city of Fuentes de Andalusia, located in the Spanish province of Seville, temporarily “changed” its name. In particular, as a sign of solidarity with our country, it will be called “Ukraine”.
