During the eruption, a giant column of smoke 3 km high rose into the sky, darkening the sky and covering surrounding villages, roads and cars with volcanic ash.

The Indonesian archipelago is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

The country has 127 active volcanoes, more than anywhere in the world. Volcano Marapi is one of the most active in the country and is also popular among travelers.
