New checkpoints on the border with Romania/Chernivtsi Regional Council

There is quite a large flow of people in Ukraine crossing the border with the European Union. To unload the checkpoints, the authorities decided to open two more.

Two new checkpoints were opened in the Chernivtsi region. The international checkpoints “Dyakovtsy” and “Krasnoilsk” across the state border of Ukraine and Romania began to work there. These two checkpoints were under reconstruction.

“This will help to further relieve traffic across the border. In addition, Ukraine is negotiating with our European neighbors to launch common checkpoints and jointly conduct customs control, which will further speed up the process of passing through customs,” its head Denys Shmyhal said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In 2021, it was envisaged that the reconstruction of the Dyakovtsy checkpoint would cost 173.2 million hryvnia, and Krasnoilsk – 166.7 million hryvnia.

How checkpoints will work

  • Dyakovtsy BCP: for pedestrian and car traffic (including buses), except for freight, with a permanent mode of operation and round-the-clock operation;
  • BCP “Krasnoilsk”: for pedestrian and car traffic (up to 3.5 tons), except for cargo, with a constant mode of operation and working hours from 8:00 to 20:00.

“The opening of new checkpoints and checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Romanian state border will create favorable conditions for reducing the load on the existing checkpoints in the Chernivtsi and Transcarpathian regions under martial law,” the government is convinced.

However, when exactly both checkpoints will be opened permanently – it is still unknown. Now these two objects have different degrees of readiness. This was announced by the head of the Chernivtsi OVA Serhiy Osachuk. If the Krasnoilsk checkpoint is more than 95% ready, then the Dyakovtsy checkpoint is about 75% ready.

Ukrainian-Romanian border

The length of the border between Ukraine and Romania is more than 613 km. In Ukraine, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Odessa regions border on Romania. Ten checkpoints have been set up in these regions on the border with Romania.

In the Chernivtsi region, there is only one checkpoint on the border with Romania, Porubne-Siret, which can be crossed both by car and on foot. There is also a checkpoint Vadul Siret – Vishkany, but only a railway one.
