The Minsk regional court sentenced a 30-year-old German Red Cross worker to death. The paramedic was accused of “terrorism” and “mercenaryism.”

The convicted man, Rico Krieger, is a German citizen. His trial took place on June 24.

Krieger was tried on 6 counts

The fact that Rico Krieger was sentenced to death became known to human rights activists only almost a month after the trial.

A German citizen in Belarus was accused under 6 articles at once:

  • mercenary work;
  • undercover activity;
  • terrorist act;
  • creation of an extremist formation;
  • deliberate disabling of a vehicle or facility communications;
  • illegal activities in relation to firearms, ammunition and explosives.

Rico Krieger was found guilty of “committing an explosion with the aim of influencing government decisions, intimidating the population, destabilizing public order.”

It is not yet clear what kind of explosion we are talking about. Human rights activists also learned that the case of a military doctor concerns the Kastus Kalinovsky Regiment, namely its structural unit of the foreign mechanized battalion “Western,” the Viasna organization added to the human rights activist.

They also said that Krieger has been in custody since November 2023. Part of his trial was held behind closed doors. Human rights activists added that this was the first trial in the country for “mercenarism.”

But the Belarusian Foreign Ministry assured that they are in contact with Germany and are holding joint consultations.
