On June 28, the famous Ukrainian poet, writer, and dissident Igor Kalinets died in Lviv. He passed away at the age of 85.
This was reported by the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi.

— At the age of 86, Igor Kalinets passed away — an honorary citizen of the city of Lviv, a poet, writer, dissident, and a long-term political prisoner of Soviet camps. Together with Irina Kalinets, they became the voice of Ukrainian dignity in the darkest times, — Sadovyi reported.

The head of the Lviv OVA Maksym Kozitsky noted that Igor Myronovych Kalinets received many awards and distinctions, including the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.
“His word was the voice of freedom, and his life was an example of invincibility and devotion to Ukraine. This is a great loss for Lviv region and our entire state,” he added.
What is known about Igor Kalinets
Igor Kalinets was born on July 9, 1939 in Khodoriv, Lviv region. He is a graduate of the philological faculty of Lviv University.
Worked in the Lviv archive and library named after Vasyl Stefanyk.
In 1972, Kalinets was sentenced by the Soviet authorities to six years of imprisonment and three years of exile; he served his sentence in the Perm concentration camps along with other members of the Sixties.
He was married to the poet and dissident activist Irina Stasiv-Kalinets, who died in 2012.
Igor Kalinets is the author of 17 poetry collections created before 1981. After his exile, he stopped writing poetry, but worked on children's literature and editing.
Laureate of numerous awards, including the Shevchenko Prize, the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Prize, and the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 4th degree (which he refused in protest against Russification).
