IAEA: Over 400 kg of uranium disappeared from Iran after US strikes

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi says the agency does not know where nearly 900 pounds (about 408 kilograms) of potentially enriched uranium from Iran has gone. Iranian officials say they moved it for safety in anticipation of possible attacks on nuclear facilities.

Grossi spoke about this in an interview with the American television channel Fox News.

The IAEA does not know where the uranium disappeared

The US military struck three Iranian nuclear sites – Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Natanz was the first to be hit, Grossi said, with “very serious damage” to the enrichment room there.

Isfahan was also damaged, but the extent of the destruction is not yet known because the premises have not been inspected.

Grossi also commented on the information that 900 pounds of uranium could have been transported near Isfahan. According to him, Iranian representatives reported that protective measures were being taken, but did not specify whether the uranium had actually been moved or where exactly.

“We have no information about the location of this material,” Grossi said.

He stressed the importance of resuming inspections as soon as possible to find out where the uranium is.

The IAEA Director General also commented on the statement by US Vice President J.D. Vance, who said that if Iran has uranium enriched to 60% but cannot increase this level to 90%, then it will not be able to create a nuclear weapon. Grossi agreed with this, but stressed that the main thing is to know where exactly the uranium is stored.

“My job is to account for every gram of uranium that exists in Iran and in any other country… My job is to try to figure out where these materials are, because Iran is required to report and account for all the materials that they have, and this will be a continuation of my work,” he said.
