Kuleba spoke about the 6th package of sanctions/collage of Channel 24
The countries of the European Union and Hungary disagree on the adoption of the 6th package of sanctions against Russia. Budapest is blocking sanctions due to the oil embargo, but Ukraine hopes that all differences will be overcome.
France helps overcome differences between the EU and Hungary.
This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba during a briefing with the French Foreign Ministry Catherine Colonna, Channel 24 reports.
The Ukrainian minister said that on May 30, a meeting of the EU committee of representatives is being held, at which sanctions against Russia are being discussed. He also recalled that the EU summit will be held, where the agenda will also include sanctions against the Russian occupiers.
Kuleba said that France, at the level of EU ambassadors and leaders, takes a principled and leadership position on sanctions against Russia. According to him, France helps to overcome differences between Hungary and other EU states.
We hope that these differences will be overcome today and an effective solution will be found that will turn the 6th sanctions package from thought to reality. – said the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
What is known about the 6th package of sanctions against Russia
- Russian energy resources help the Kremlin to wage war against Ukraine, since their sales fill the economy of the aggressor country with money. Therefore, in the 5th package of sanctions, the EU imposed an embargo on Russian coal.
- After that, the countries of the European Union are trying to reduce their dependence on Russian gas and are ready to impose an embargo on oil from Russia. In early May, the European Commission presented the 6th package of sanctions, which provides for a ban on Russian oil.
- However, the EU member states have not yet agreed on sanctions. The key issue is the embargo, which Hungary opposes. The government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is blocking the introduction of the 6th package of sanctions.
- Budapest is ready to agree to an embargo in exchange for 15-18 billion euros from the EU. Subsequently, information appeared that the embargo could be introduced without Hungary. That is, Budapest will continue to import Russian oil.
- On May 30, the next meeting of EU ambassadors took place and the 6th package of sanctions against Russia was not agreed upon. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said a new package of sanctions is unlikely to be approved at the EU summit.
