I have questions for my partners: what is the state of the Russian economy under the influence of sanctions?

by alex

Western media are disseminating information that the Russian economy is thriving, and the imposed sanctions are not really affecting Russians. There are still many questions for Western partners.

Political scientist Alexey Buryachenko told 24 Channel that Russians find a huge number of ways to circumvent sanctions. Although they are an effective tool, they need to be strengthened and modernized in order to prevent the Russian economy from stabilizing as much as possible.

Untrue

The political scientist emphasizes that after components from the United States and the European Union are found in Russian missiles that fly into peaceful cities of Ukraine , huge questions arise for Western partners.

Sanctions need to be strengthened, noted Alexey Buryachenko.

As for Western experts who say that the Russian economy is thriving, the political scientist is sure that this is not true, especially if you analyze the state of the Russian economy by segment before the full-scale attack on Ukraine and now.

Despite the fact that the Russians have now closed all statistical data so that no one can conduct an analysis, some information still ends up in the media, from which the political scientist suggests making a more or less objective assessment of the Russian economy.

  • Oil. Despite the fact that the Russians have almost reached pre-war export volume, the price of oil is 3 – 4 times less than when sold to the EU before the start of the war.
  • Gas.< /strong>Volumes have increased, but there is nowhere to accumulate. Liquefied gas remains as a segment of relevant exports to the EU, but it is of little importance.

The volume of the Russian economy has greatly decreased, and the only reason it is now balancing is the accumulation of reserve funds.

Billions of resources for the sake of influence

Russians also export dual-use goods for their military-industrial complex at 5 – 6 times the nominal value for which they could previously purchase these goods.< /p>

Since Russia’s GDP is now based precisely on the military component, it has a huge sag in all other industries,” Buryachenko said.

In his opinion, when Russia spends billions of resources in order to have influence on Western experts and the media, on holding round tables, where they put loyal experts and tell the world that everything is fine with them and the economy is thriving despite sanctions, this absolute disinformation and untruth.

The Russians seem to emphasize: no matter what the West does for more than two years, the Russian economy that Russia did not fall, and Russia did not collapse, it is still thriving. Thus, Russia is encouraging our Western partners to reach agreements and a more loyal position regarding negotiations with Vladimir Putin,” the political scientist concluded.

Economic problems of Russia

  • In 2022, Russia supplied a total of about 63.8 billion to Europe via various routes cubic meters of gas. In 2023, this volume decreased by 55.6% to 28.3 billion cubic meters.
  • Due to lost gas sales in Europe, Russia is trying to fill the gaps through the domestic market and exports to China.
  • In the first quarter of 2024, Russia's gas production monopoly suffered sales losses of almost 47 billion rubles ($501 million).
  • Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries caused hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage to Russians and slowed down the Kremlin’s “war machine.” In April, Russia even asked Kazakhstan to create a reserve fund of 100,000 tons of gasoline.
  • Due to sanctions, Russia cannot repair the equipment for its refineries, since it is made from Russian and foreign units. Since the beginning of 2024, due to drone attacks on refineries, the Russians were forced to close about 14% of their capacity in the first quarter.
