Karpaty head coach Miron Markevich believes that the Argentine forward should not have received the Ballon d'Or award in 2023.
According to him, Argentina's victory in the 2022 World Cup final is the only achievement for which Messi can be celebrated last season.
“I don’t think Messi deserved to win the Ballon d’Or this year, even though he is the strongest player in the history of football. Winning the World Cup was the only thing that could be celebrated about Messi last season. He already has seven Ballon d'Ors, where does he need an eighth? This is impractical,” Markevich said.
He added that his leader was the Norwegian Erling Haaland, and the second place was earned by the French forward Kylian Mbappe.

— My leader is Holland. He scored a ton of goals last season and won the treble. I'll put Mbappe second. I also like Bellingham today, he is very young but a top player. I think Bellingham will be in contention for the next Ballon d'Or. He is a unique footballer, I haven’t seen anyone like him for a long time,” Markevich said.
On October 30, the Ballon d'Or ceremony took place in Paris. For the eighth time in his career, Lionel Messi won the trophy. Aitana Bonmati became the best football player in the world and the winner of the Golden Ball for women.
