I distracted my sister so that she would look at the birds and not at the dead: a story from the besieged Mariupol

The story of a volunteer from Mariupol/collage of channel 24

Volunteer Alina Gorgul, who escaped from Mariupol, told her story. It was the area where the girl lived that the Russians began to shell first.

Alina hoped that the attacks would only last a few days. However, later it became dangerous throughout Mariupol.

She was glad that the military did not leave them

The girl was near Petrovsky Park. From there, she went to the center to find out at least something about the situation in the country.

There was not even half an hour that fired and exploded. These were cassettes, hailstones, air bombs. The shelling was constant. I saw the Ukrainian military and my friends from Azov, the marines and the patrol police. I was very glad, because they are alive, they are here and did not leave us. They are with us!, – said the girl.

I was afraid to die slowly

However, it was then that the infidels began air bombardment. The shells fell closer and closer to Alina. Subsequently, there was a super-powerful explosion. Glass shattered in buildings around. A shell fell on the girl, but hit the road and did not explode.

Explosions continued throughout Mariupol. The girl was afraid that she would not make it home and would die slowly in agony.

They shot at people in open areas

Alina said that there were more than 100 airstrikes a day. People couldn't even get water safely. The nearest place where it was possible to do this was under fire, so we decided to go through the field. It was hoped that the Russians would not shoot in open areas. However, when the girl and her family went to fetch water, the attack began again.

They could have been killed at the roadblock

When Alina was driving from Mariupol, she saw horrific destruction. She tried to distract her younger sister and showed her the birds in the sky, because the ground was covered with corpses.

The girl had a photo with the military on her phone. She also had patriotic dads. Alina was afraid that the Russians would kill her at the checkpoint, but they only checked the men. When she and her family got to the first Ukrainian checkpoint, she was very happy.
