Angela Merkel said she is not backing down on her decisions regarding the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The former German chancellor believes that the project made economic and political sense.

The politician said that she does not consider her decision to build the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 to be wrong. This was reported by 24 Kanal, citing her interview with Spiegel.

Why Angela Merkel did not admit her mistaken policy

Merkel noted that at the time of the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, gas supplies through Nord Stream 2 had not yet been carried out. She also added that she does not regret her previous decisions.

According to the former chancellor, her task was to ensure access to cheap energy for the German economy. Merkel noted that at that time there was no political majority that would support abandoning gas trade with Russia, and the business community also did not approve of such a step.

Please note! She believed that Nord Stream 2 had important political significance, in particular in the context of maintaining ties with Russia. The politician explained that after the end of the Cold War, cooperation with the Russian side could help bring Vladimir Putin into the global economic system.

To journalists' comments about the error of her policy, Merkel responded that she did everything possible to avoid the current situation.

I tried to stop the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine during the negotiations in Minsk in 2015. Then it seemed stupid to me to simultaneously say that we were breaking all economic ties, which were also important for Putin, the former German Chancellor recalled.

Merkel is convinced that at the beginning of his rule, Putin allegedly did not intend to fight with Ukraine, and his aggressive plans were formed over time, in particular due to the actions of Western countries.
