American Willy Joseph Kansel died defending Ukraine from Russian invaders. A former US Marine fought alongside the Ukrainian military.
The American came to Ukraine as a volunteer
After Russia broke into Ukraine, 22-year-old Willy turned to a private military company that recruited volunteers. The former US Marine quit his job as a corrections officer in Tennessee and came to Ukraine.
He believed in what Ukraine was fighting for, and he wanted to be a part of this confrontation: to keep this evil from coming here (America), and perhaps our soldiers did not have to participate in this, said the mother of the deceased American.
She also said that her son's body was not found on the battlefield, but she wants to return it and bury it. The publication added that the US government is aware of this situation.
For privacy reasons, we have no further comment. We reiterate that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine due to an active armed conflict and should leave immediately using any commercial or other private ground vehicles, the State Department official quoted the publication.
Ukraine Volunteers from over 50 countries are defending
