Hungary to veto EU sanctions against Russian nuclear power, – Orban

Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly called on the European Union to impose sanctions against the state nuclear energy company Rosatom. Most countries have supported this request, but Hungary is still blocking all attempts.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would veto any potential EU sanctions related to nuclear energy. According to media reports, the next package of sanctions should be adopted on the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Orban will continue to block sanctions

Prime Orban said that will use the right of veto if the EU tries to impose any restrictions on Russian nuclear energy.

He assured that Hungary will not allow the implementation of the plan to include Russian nuclear companies in the EU sanctions package.

It's out of the question. Sanctions on nuclear energy should obviously be vetoed, the prime minister said.

Recall that Ukraine has previously called on 27 EU countries to impose restrictions against Rosatom, but Hungary, which has a nuclear power plant built back in Soviet times, power plant “Paks”, opposes.

Budapest plansto expand its single nuclear power plant together with Rosatom. In September 2022, the construction of a new power unit began.

By the way, Hungary criticizes the EU anti-Russian sanctions, arguing that they cannot significantly weaken the Russian economy, while “these restrictions can destroy the European economy.”

The United States imposed another package of sanctions on Russia: what is known

  • On January 26, the US Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Russia. The restrictions apply to ship repair enterprises, as well as structures and persons associated with the Wagner PMC and its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin.
  • The United States also officially recognized the Russian private military company Wagner as a transnational criminal organization. All the company's assets in the United States were frozen due to assistance to the Russian military in the war in Ukraine.
  • The Wagner PMC itself, as well as the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service in Tula, Ivan Prokopenko, were included in the list of sanctions. It is known that he provided support and recruited prisoners to the Wagner PMC.
  • In addition, numerous legal entities and individuals on different continents that support the military operations of the Wagner group fell under US sanctions.
