Hungary threatens to veto negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU

by alex

Hungary is threatening to block the start of EU accession talks with Ukraine at a summit in December until the law on language in education is repealed.

This was announced by Advisor to the Prime Minister of Hungary Balazs Orban in an interview with NOS.

— New laws have made the life of Hungarians in Ukraine unbearable. We cannot agree with this,” he said.

In Ukraine, a law was introduced obliging minorities, not just Hungarians, to receive at least 70 percent of their education in Ukrainian.

According to Orbán, Hungary is concerned that children growing up in Hungarian-speaking families in Ukraine will fall behind significantly in their studies.

“Hungary’s position is absolutely clear: as long as this law exists, there can be no discussions with Ukrainians about their integration into the European Union,” he emphasized.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he would like the Ukrainian delegation to come to Budapest before the EU decides on the next tranche from the European Peace Fund for military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
