Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has once again issued a strange statement. He began to say that the West seemed to have started a new Cold War.
According to the Hungarian prime minister, Budapest intends to claim the role of regional leader. He stated this in his speech at the Christmas dinner of the Sell Kalman Foundation.
Orban believes the West has started a new “Cold War”
The Prime Minister of Hungary said that the biggest challenges facing his country in the next decade are:
- leaving the group of middle-income countries,
- catch up with developed countries,
- achieving the status of a regional middle state in Central Europe.
According to him, the neoliberal model of globalization is becoming a thing of the past. As a result, new rivals are emerging in the US, as the model has allowed states such as China to gain a foothold.
The beginning of the Ukrainian-Russian war in 2022 put an end to the “i”, which made it clear that the current Western-centrism cannot hold its ground, as Western competitors have intensified, not least due to the liberalization of trade and the economy,” Orban said.
He believes that the answer is to resist rivals, the West, led by the United States allegedly launched a “Cold War.” The new world order lies in the fact that all economic, political and cultural interactions pass through the leading states of the existing blocs. At the same time, Hungary has a negative historical experience of existence in bloc confrontation.
“Therefore, the initial step of the Hungarian catch-up strategy is to develop a country-specific logic of globalization to overcome the negative consequences,” Orban said.
The Hungarian prime minister is convinced that his country should be on good terms with states that are competitors to the West. Like, this is the only way to avoid marginalization.
