Hungary's exclusion from the European Union is a reality. It can even be done defiantly in order to influence other current and future EU members.
The key question is how else can the EU put Viktor Orban in his place, if not to ask about his possible expulsion. This opinion was expressed by Channel 24 political scientist Mykola Davidyuk.
Hungary is a symbolic sacrifice
The expert is convinced that exclusion of Hungary is quite real. Like, the European Union needs to be transformed, and for this it is even necessary to exclude someone over the next 5-10 years.
To bring discipline. They took everyone, but in order to take it further, you need to show that you can both enter and exit. If there is no such exit opportunity, the entry threshold will be difficult, – explains Mykola Davidyuk.
He expressed the opinion that now Albania or Montenegro are more suitable for the role of an EU member than, for example, Hungary. However, they are not taken, because the European Union can be “great”.
“They will say that it is too difficult to approve the decision. And when there is a possibility of deintegration, exclusion, then they will take it easier,” the political scientist said.

Greater responsibility for potential members
Another positive aspect for the European Union from the possibility of exclusion is that it will be a greater political responsibility for the transitional economies and political regimes – Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Balkan countries and etc.
These are the countries that said they also wanted to become members of the European Union. However, if they know that they can exclude them, then the reforms will be done more honestly, – the expert explains.
Consequently, he reconsidered that in this context Hungary could become a symbolic victim. However, this will not cause the domino principle.
“But China and Russia can provoke Orban to leave, they will be interested in creating some chaos on the territory of the EU. Indeed, this may be of interest,” Mykola Davidyuk said.
Why Hungary may be excluded from the EU:
- The European Union has a number of questions to the regime of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. In particular, according to his probable corruption schemes.
- The politician himself “burned out” on them when he tried to impose on the EU the opinion on the need to lift sanctions against individual Russians. His interest in this matter can only be one.
- Many political experts agree that Orban and his Fidesz party are kept in power, in part, thanks to generous financial “support” from Russia. It is valued at hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
