At the checkpoint in Vasilyevka in Zaporozhye, the Russians have blocked thousands of people who are trying to evacuate to the territory controlled by Ukraine. People, among whom there are children and seriously ill people, are forced to wait in the heat for days.

About 5,000 people in line

In such difficult conditions, while in line, 5 people died. It is known that three of them suffered a stroke, and another woman suffered a heart attack. This Channel 24 was told by a correspondent from Zaporozhye.

According to him, about a thousand cars or approximately 5,000 people gathered in line in front of the checkpoint. A quarter of them are children, as well as many elderly people. The problem is that the occupiers only allow as many cars as they see fit.

They form columns of 10 cars, rewrite the numbers of cars, all the passport data of drivers and passengers, search everything, take away things. It is clear that they take money from those who want to travel, the average fee is 1,000 hryvnia per passenger,” the journalist said.

Consequently, people spend 4-5 days in line. The area is not wooded. People are looking for some trees and plantings to somehow hide from the sun.

According to the correspondent, the publicity about the situation in Vasilievka, caused in recent days, helped somewhat. If the Russians usually allowed up to 1,500 people a day through the checkpoint, then, according to the military administration, 1,942 people, 512 of them children, were able to pass through the checkpoint in the last 24 hours.

Residents of Kherson are also trying to evacuate

He noted that there were more cars in the queue, because residents of the temporarily occupied Kherson region are also going to Zaporozhye. They can drive to Vasilyevka along the left bank of the Dnieper – along the Kharkiv-Simferopol highway.

Consequently, about a third of those who have already been able to leave are Kherson residents. On the territory of Zaporozhye, a hub was created in order to receive residents of Kherson and distribute them for further evacuation. In addition, there is a shelter there, where 300, and later 400 who arrived from the Kherson region will be able to spend the night. The United Nations is helping to organize these measures.

Despite some improvement in the situation, there are many more people who want to leave than the Russians miss. Of course, they will not want to let everyone through at the same time, since the people standing in Vasilyevka are a definite “human shield” for them. This is how they protect the Russian troops stationed there from shelling.

Besides, for infidels, the checkpoint in Vasilievka is a powerful business. After all, to drive, you need to pay, and to drive quickly, you need to pay more. This is how they collect a lot of money for themselves and their leadership.
