The Hungarian authorities violated the laws of the European Union and the UN.
The Hungarian authorities violated the legislation of the European Union and issued a “draconian regulation” canceling state funding for asylum for refugees from Western Ukraine, leaving many people homeless.
This is stated in the report Human Rights Watch.
The Hungarian Helsinki Committee reported that due to the government's action, about 3,000 refugees from Ukraine, most of them women and children, have suffered.
“The Hungarian government has hit new lows with this cruel decision, throwing thousands of people who fled the war in Ukraine onto the streets. The European Commission should use all the tools at its disposal to force Budapest to reverse this ruling and live up to its responsibilities as an EU member state,” said Lidiya Gall.
A decree by Viktor Orban's government restricts access to state-funded housing for Ukrainian refugees, giving that right to those registered in territory that Hungarian authorities consider war-torn. This ruling indicates that Ukrainian refugees registered in areas deemed safe for return by the Hungarian government are deprived of the right to housing financed by the Hungarian state.
The organization recalled that the ruling violates the 2001 EU Temporary Protection Directive, which came into force in March 2022 after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and requires EU member states to provide temporary protection and assistance to all refugees from Ukraine.
In addition, the ruling contradicts the recommendations of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which makes no distinction between the regions of the country affected by the war.
Recall that it was previously reported that Hungarian company agreed to supply Russian oil via Ukraine.
In addition, we previously reported that Estonia changed the terms of compensation for housing rent for Ukrainians.
