“Historic moment”: Germany will station an entire Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania to contain Russia

Monday 18 December the “road map”, that is, the schedule for the deployment of troops, was signed by the heads of the defense departments of Germany and Lithuania, Boris Pistorius and Arvydas Anusauskas.

Pistorius said during the signing ceremony that it was a “historic moment” and a “milestone”. The head of the Defense Ministry also noted that they would create a combat-ready brigade under the leadership of Germany, which would restrain the aggressor country. Anusauskas also has no doubts about who the German military could potentially oppose.

The greatest threat to us is Russia’s aggressive policy,” the minister emphasized .

What the plan suggests

The corresponding plan consolidates the intentions of Germany and Lithuania. We are talking about the deployment of a German brigade in Lithuania, as well as the further course of action for their full-scale deployment. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense previously reported this.

The plan provides that German troops will arrive in Lithuania gradually. The process will begin in 2024, but the deployment will be completed by 2027. This action plan was prepared by joint working groups, which included the Ministries of Defense of both Germany and Lithuania.

As for the core of the German brigade, it should consist of five battalions. In particular, we are talking about tank and artillery.

Germany plans to station about 5 thousand of its soldiers and civilians in Lithuania. During the period of long rotation, their families will also join them.

Note that in Lithuania they are calling for faster deployment German military. Thus, Gitanas Nauseda noted that he would strive for the German brigade to be deployed by the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, the German Ministry of Defense has begun developing a detailed incentive system. They are working on it to encourage their own military to permanently deploy to Lithuania.
